Pro-lifers in Massachusetts today are joining other advocates around the world to mark the start of the biannual campaign 40 Days for Life, a global movement that aims to encourage women to choose life.
The fall campaign coincides with Respect Life Month, which is observed each October, and will conclude Nov. 2. Around the world, pro-lifers will spend time in front of abortion clinics, praying and offering hope to those interested in talking.
40 Days for Life is open to people of all faiths. In Massachusetts, Father Daniel Pacholec, director of Pro-Life Activities for the Diocese of Springfield, described his local 40 Days for Life campaign as an opportunity to care for those in need.
“The 40 Days for Life offers us a wonderful opportunity to stand for the most vulnerable among us — the unborn,” Fr. Pacholec said, according to Catholic Communications News. “And as we pray for their protection, we also pray for their moms and dads, and we walk with them.”
He added that western Massachusetts has many organizations that offer support and love to families in crisis.
Fr. Pacholec will join other members of his community in front of the Western Massachusetts Health Center of Springfield, an abortion facility operated by the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. Local organizers say that they know of at least 26 children who are alive today because of conversations they had with mothers during previous 40 Days for Life campaigns.
The campaign is widely recognized for helping mothers choose life. According to Catholic Communications News, more than 25,000 children have been saved from abortion worldwide because of the campaign, which began in 2007.
“40 Days for Life is the most fruitful pro-life work that I am aware of today,” said Jeanne Monahan, president of March for Life, according to the 40 Days for Life website. “The peaceful, prayerful witness of joyful pro-lifers outside of abortion clinics has a life or death impact on a daily basis. Whenever anyone asks me what they can do to make a tangible difference in building a culture of life, I tell them about 40 Days for Life.”
Those interested in participating can find more information and campaign locations on the 40 Days for Life website.
